Community of Royal

Community of Royal

Royal is one of Florida’s oldest African American communities. Founded in 1865, the community of Royal was originally known as Picketsville, which was named for the white picket fences that marked its 40-acre homesteads. It was settled by former slaves from the Old Green Plantation located on the Withlacoochee River.

Wahoo Comm Bldg/Historical Site

A historical marker at a flagpole about the Battle of Wahoo Swamp among some shady oaks and picnic tables. There is also a historical display of the DeSoto Trail, stating that DeSoto found the village of Tocaste here.
