Community of Royal
Royal is one of Florida’s oldest African American communities. Founded in 1865, the community of Royal was originally known as Picketsville, which was named for the white picket fences that marked its 40-acre homesteads. It was settled by former slaves from the Old Green Plantation located on the Withlacoochee River.

County Seat Historical Monument
The marker commemorating the old Sumterville courthouse is collocated with the Wahoo Community Center and Historical Site. The Center features a park and a picnic area with a grill.

Dade Battlefield Historic State Park
The Dade Battlefield Historic State Park commemorates this battle and honors the participants on both sides. In addition to tours of the battlefield itself, the park features a hiking trail with abundant wildlife; a visitor’s center with clean restrooms; a pavilion and lodge perfect for wedding receptions and family reunions; geo-seeking and much more. Also, every January features a reenactment of the battle, which is historically accurate and exquisitely detailed.
